Understory (ongoing) is a personal essay about my parents' divorce.
From a very young age, the only version of the story I had ever heard came from my mother. My father has guarded a suspicious silence regarding his relationship with her; an omission that has defined him for my sister and me. His reserved manner, sharpened by his hearing impairment, has kept us distant from this part of him, and this part of us.
As I question their divorce 25 years later, I see before me a totally unfamiliar forest: the silent place that is my father.
